The Story of the Autograph
Wayne Garret played in the major leagues for ten years as a third baseman. He was originally drafted by the Braves but played in the major with the Mets, Expos, and Cardinals. Then he moved on to play some ball in Japan.
Garrett was originally draft by the Milwaukee Braves in 1965. He joined the Braves organization as both of his brothers, Adrian and James, were also with the organization. He played in the Braves organization until 1968 when the Mets picked him up in the Rule 5 Draft.
He made his debut in April of 1969 but for the first month he mostly played at second base. After that first month he played as part of a platoon with Ed Charles. He only hit one home run during the regular season, but he would match that total in the postseason. Garrett had an amazing NLCS against the Atlanta Braves with a homer, .385 average, three RBI and three runs scored. What a way to end your rookie year.
Ed Charles retired after the Mets won the World Series and they were always looking for a third baseman. Garrett never seemed to be the answer and he took up more of a utility infielder role as the Mets went through different options that never really worked out. Garrett would go on to have great years in 1973 and 1974. In 1973 that helped the Mets make another World Series where he would hit two homers. Unfortunately the Mets couldn’t beat the Athletics.
Garrett went back to platooning at third until the Mets moved him to Montreal. The Expos moved him to second. When his time was over in Montreal he decided to move to playing in Japan where his brother Adrian was playing.
The Score on Wayne Garrett – 7.5
I really like Wayne’s autograph. I know it’s basically like a crazy scrunched up heart monitor readout, but I like it. It fills up the card and it came out great with the thin marker. I only wish I had a Mets card for Wayne for him to sign. I think I’ll need to scour my collection a little bit more.
Thanks Mr. Garrett! I think this one deserves a 7.5.
