The Story of the Autograph

Von Joshua is a former left-handed and left-hand hitting outfielder in the major leagues. He played during 10 seasons from 1969 to 1980. During that time he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (twice), San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres.

Joshua was born and raised in Oakland, California. He went to Chabot College and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round with the 17th overall pick of the 1967 MLB Draft, but he didn’t sign. He instead signed with the Dodgers six months later as an amateur free agent. He made his first major league appearance on September 2, 1969.

In five seasons with the Dodgers from 1969 to 1974 he never played more than half a season. To end his first stint in L.A. he struck out against Rollie Fingers in the 1974 World Series as the last out. The Giants got him off of waivers and his 1975 season would be his most significant chance and his best season. That year he put up a 2.2 WAR in 129 games with seven homers, 43 RBI and 20 stolen bases along with a career high .318 batting average.

He would move around a bit after that season. Later he was the hitting coach for the Albuequerque Dukes and the Iowa Cubs. He later got a chance to be hitting coach in the majors as well in 2009 with the Chicago Cubs.

Those cards with two players can always be tricky. It looks like Von just tried to sign over himself. As for the 1980 card, I like that he signed a Dodger card because that’s where he spent significant time, even if it wasn’t his best time, in the majors. But he didn’t actually play with them in 1980 having already moved on. Plus there’s that darn facsimile signature getting in the way.

Thanks Mr. Joshua! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
