The Story of the Autograph
Tony Casillas is a former defensive tackle in the National Football League. He played from 1986 to 1997 with the Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys (twice), and New York Jets.
Casillas is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma. After having an All-State career in high school he went on to Oklahoma University. His college career started with an injury and mono that lost him a season. Then on top of that he didn’t paly much the next year either. He moved to nose tackle and would become an All-American, All-Conference, and eventually the second Sooner to win the Lombardi award in 1985. He was also the UPI Lineman of the Year and the Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year. Later he would be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
The Falcons took him with the second overall pick in the first round of the 1986 NFL Draft. He started as a rookie and had 111 tackles plus a sack and earned All-Rookie honors. Injuries and a strike-shortened season didn’t help him the following year. In 1989 he was in top form and set a record for a lineman with 152 tackles, two of them sacks. For that he earned Second-Team All-Pro honors. The following season would start with contract disputes, discipline issues, injuries and he was saying he would retire in 1991.
The Falcons traded him to the Cowboys for a two draft picks and was part of a great defensive line there. He helped the Cowboys to win Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII during his time there. He left for Kansas City but never played there and then moved on to the Jets. It was back to the Cowboys for his final two seasons in the league.
The Score on Tony Casillas – 5.5
Tony was definitely someone that I forgot how good he was until I sent back and looked at the back of his cards. I was glad to see he was signing, at least for a time, but I haven’t seen him sign that much since I got these back. Somehow I avoided any cards with the black uniform where he would have to sign over it. These came out OK (get it? He’s from Oklahoma!), but there was some rubbing on them.
Thanks Mr. Casillas! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
