The Story of the Autograph
Tommy Helms is a former second baseman and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1964 to 1977 with the Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox. He later managed the Reds from 1988 to 1989.
Helms was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was signed by the Reds at the age of 18 before the 1959 season. He spent several years in the minors and was in the U.S. Marine Corps before making his major league debut on September 23, 1964. He didn’t get a full season in the majors until 1966. He was a shortstop but moved to third base for playing time and earned the 1966 National League Rookie of the Year honors.
He later moved to second base and was named to the National League All-Star team in the 1967 and 1968 seasons. He’d continue to earn notoriety by playing in the 1970 World Series (losing to the Orioles) and then earning Gold Glove Awards in the 1970 and 1971 seasons. The Reds needed to make moves for their next step in becoming the Big Red Machine and dealt Helms and others to the Astros for a group including Joe Morgan.
Helms spent four seasons in Houston before moving around a lot to close out his career. He went to Pittsburgh and then Boston before playing his last game on October 1, 1977.

Tommy has a nice signature but each of these has it’s issues. There are smudges and extra marks and then just busy cards. I’ve had some inconsistent success with Tommy as he’s returned some and then not on others. Just know that before giving him a shot.
