The Story of the Autograph

Tom Trebelhorn is a former minor league catcher and infielder and a major and minor league coach and manager. He managed for the Brewers and Cubs in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Trebelhorn starting his professional playing career after being drafted in the sixth round in the 1970 MLB Draft. He initially was part of the California Angels organization and its affiliates. He also played with the Padres and Athletics in the minors.

When he finished his playing career in the mid 70’s he went almost immediately into coaching with the Athletics, Indians and Pirates in the minors. One thing of note while he was in the Athletics organization is that he helped coach Rickey Henderson. Not that you can “coach speed” but even Henderson mentioned Trebelhorn in his Hall of Fame inductions speech in 2009.

He started with the Brewers organization in 1984 and then moved into the managerial spot in the majors upon the retirement of George Bamburger toward the end of the 1986 season. In his first full season as a manager the Brewers one thirteen straight to start the year and finished third that year. That helped earned Trebelhorn the Manager of the Year award that year. He couldn’t keep up the success though and was let go after the 1991 season.

Trebelhorn went on to the Cubs as a coach and was made manager in 1994. Unfortunately the Cubs finished in last place and he was let go. He continued to coach and manage in the minor leagues and he coached the Italian national team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

I always find it interesting when guys change their signature within a return. You can see Tom put his autograph on a line for the 1988 card, but for the 1989 cards he stacked his autograph. I’m not sure what about the cards made that seem that that fit better. I don’t mean either is a bad choice, I just wonder why it happened that way. The ’88 card is a bit rubbed off so that definitely impacts the score.

Thanks Mr. Trebelhorn! I’m giving this return a 6.
