The Story of the Autograph
Tom Runnells is a former infielder and manager in the major leagues. He played for the Cincinnati Reds during the 1985 and ’86 seasons. Then later he managed the Montreal Expos during the 1991 and ’92 seasons.
Runnells was born and raised in Greeley, Colorado. After going to high school in Greeley he stayed there for college and went to the University of Northern Colorado, also located in Greeley. He wasn’t drafted and was instead signed by the San Francisco Giants in 1977 as a amateur free agent. He never made it to the majors with them though. In 1983 he became a free agent and signed with the Reds.
After a year in the Reds system he made his major league debut on August 10, 1985. He would go on to play 40 games over the next two seasons, with 28 to close out that 1985 season. He would hit .174 during his time as a major leaguer and have eight hits, two doubles and no homers or RBI.
Runnells was coaching the season immediately after his final one as a player. He stayed in the Reds system with the Vermont Reds in 1987. In 1989 he managed the Indianapolis Indians to the American Association championship and was promoted to a coaching position with Montreal. He moved into the managers role 49 games into the 1991 season, replacing Buck Rodgers.
He was never able to have much success though, as you might think when you start with a last place ball club. He was fired just 37 games into the following season. He went back to the minors and coach with the Tigers and Rockies systems, then made it back to the majors as a coach with the Rockies.
The Score on Tom Runnells – 7.0
Tom has a pretty sweet signature. His “R” is pretty amazing and maybe one of my favorites for that letter. I love how it is the focal point of the signature and bigger than anything else within the autograph. His writing almost has a sort of rhythm to it to me.
Thanks Mr. Runnells! I’m giving this return a 7.
