The Story of the Autograph
Tom Poquette is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played during seven seasons from 1973 to 1982. During that time he played for the Kansas City Royals (twice), Boston Red Sox, and Texas Rangers.
Poquette was born and raised in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He played baseball, football and basketball in high school and his team won the state championship in baseball during his sophomore year. The Royals drafted him out of high school in the fourth round of the 1970 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut three years later as a September call-up on September 1, 1973. But after that time his next appearances wouldn’t come until 1976.
He might be best known for an injury. During an inside-the-park homer by Kevin Bell his cleats caught on the Astro Turf and it caused him to run into the wall. He fractured his cheekbone during the incident and was out a month. The walls were padded after that (too bad for Tom). Although he played in limited time, only playing 80 or more games four times, he hit over 300 three times. His best seasons were between 1976 and 1978.
After his playing days Poquette coached in the Royals organization.
The Score on Tom Poquette – 6.5
It’s always nice to get a signature on a Rookie Cup card. While I’m not a huge fan of the 1977 Topps cards because of the facsimile autographs, the Royals cards look pretty good. The blue marker with that powder blue uniform is a good combination. Tom doesn’t have a super fancy or detailed signature but he makes it a good size on the card.
Thanks Mr. Poquette! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
