The Story of the Autograph
Tod Murphy is a former player in the NBA and current college basketball coach. He played professionally from 1987 to 1998 with the Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Piston, and Golden State Warriors as well as with team in American minor leagues and in Spain, Greece, Italy and Japan. He was an assistant at UC Riverside and UC Irvine and currently is the head coach at Gordon.
Murphy is a California native. He went to UC Irvine and was then drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the third round of the 1986 NBA Draft. He was cut during training camp and went to play in Italy where he got hurt. The following year he was signed by the Clippers, but was cut once Michael Cage (who he was signed to replace while Cage was holding out) returned.
That was already a lot of bouncing around to start his career. He would continue bouncing all over the world until 1989 when he was signed by the expansion Timberwolves. He spent three years in Minnesota with his first being the best chance at success. It was his best year in the NBA by far when he played in all 82 games with 59 starts and scoring 8.3 points per game. All of those career highs given he got his best shot at playing time.
After his three years in Minnesota he bounced around more for the rest of his career until he retired while after playing in Japan in 1998. He’s pretty much been coaching in the college ranks since then.
The Score on Tod Murphy – 6.0
Tod puts a good amount of ink on your card considering he shorts his name a letter from what I think is the traditional spelling (LOL!). I think two of these came out really well for basketball cards. The 1989 NBA Hoops and the 1990 Fleer I think are really good. I actually like the League Leader for “Fewest Turnovers”. That’s probably not something that people would think to call out for a leader.
Thanks Mr. Murphy! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
