The Story of the Autograph
Tim Blackwell is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1974 to 1983 with the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos (twice), and Chicago Cubs.
Blackwell was born and raised in the San Diego area. The Red Sox drafted him at the age of seventeen in the 13th round of the 1970 MLB Draft. After four years in the minors he made his major league debut on July 3, 1974. At the time the Sox were in a pennant race and he was filling in for an injured Carlton Fisk. That started some interesting situations in moves where he would see some similar faces and back up some other great catchers.
He moved on to Philadelphia to back up another pretty good catcher in Bob Boone, then in mid 1977 the Phillies traded him for Barry Foote and he backed up Gary Carter. He’d cross paths again with Barry Foote as they were part of the same Cubs team for a little while after the Cubs. He’d close out his career with the Expos in 1983.
Blackwell was not a great hitter but he was a very good defensive catcher. In 1980 he lead the NL in double plays and baserunners caught stealing, then finished second to Carter in assists at catcher. He went on to coach and manage in a few different organizations and won minor league championships and Manager of the Year awards.
The Score on Tim Blackwell – 6.5
Tim puts a ton of ink on your cards and the 1978 cards are a great example. Aside from the “B” his name is pretty much a zig-zag style. He uses the space well and fills up the card pretty well. The 1983 card is a problem because of how much dark space is on the card. One thing I love best about these cards are the uniforms. The Expos had some fun uniforms back in the day.
Thanks Mr. Blackwell! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
