The Story of the Autograph
In the rich history of Major League Baseball, there are pitchers who may not have gained superstar status but left a lasting impact with their talent and perseverance. Steve Hargan was one such pitcher – an All-Star right-hander known for his sharp fastball and ability to work deep into games. Over the course of a 12-year career, he pitched for multiple teams, enjoying his best years with the Cleveland Indians while also making stops in Texas, Toronto, and Atlanta.
Steven Hargan was born on September 8, 1942, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He played high school baseball in Fort Wayne before attending college, where he honed his skills as a pitcher. In 1961, he signed with the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent, beginning a professional journey that would take him to the big leagues. Hargan spent several years working his way through the minor leagues before making his MLB debut on August 3, 1965, for Cleveland. His early performances showed promise, and by 1966, he had established himself as a key piece of the Indians’ starting rotation.
Hargan’s breakout season came in 1967, when he went 14-13 with a 2.62 ERA in 29 starts. That year, he was selected to his first and only All-Star Game, marking the peak of his career. He finished the season among the American League leaders in ERA and complete games, proving himself as a workhorse for the Indians. Though Hargan had a strong arm, injuries and inconsistency at times limited his ability to sustain success. He struggled in the early 1970s, leading Cleveland to move on from him.
He was out of the majors for the 1973 season. Then in December of that year, Hargan was traded to the Texas Rangers, where he spent parts of four seasons. In 1977, he joined the expansion Toronto Blue Jays, giving the young franchise a veteran presence in its inaugural season. Hargan made his final MLB stop with the Atlanta Braves in 1977, appearing in just 16 games before retiring from professional baseball. Over his 12-year career, he compiled a 87-107 record, a 3.92 ERA, and 891 strikeouts across 354 games.
Following his retirement, Hargan remained connected to the game, working as a coach and instructor at various levels. His knowledge of pitching made him a valuable mentor for young players learning the nuances of the game.
Though he never achieved Hall of Fame status, Steve Hargan’s career is a testament to perseverance and adaptability in Major League Baseball. From an All-Star season in Cleveland to his role as a veteran leader for an expansion team, he contributed to the sport in meaningful ways. His journey serves as a reminder that in baseball, hard work, resilience, and a passion for the game can lead to a long and respected career—even without the bright lights of superstardom.
The Score on Steve Hargan – 6.5

Yet another new guy added to my TTM attempt list. I really like this return from Steve. I think that 1970 Topps card is my favorite of these. I really like how that set looks signed, but on top of that, I really love those old Cleveland uniforms with the red.
Thanks, Mr. Hargan! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
