Born on April 29, 1958, in Pryor, Oklahoma, Steven Ray Crawford honed his skills at Northeastern State University and Rogers State University. Undrafted, he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1978, beginning his professional career with the Winston-Salem Red Sox in the Class-A Carolina League. There, he earned the nickname “Shag” due to his distinctive long hair and mustache .
Crawford made his MLB debut on September 2, 1980, with the Boston Red Sox, delivering a scoreless relief appearance against the California Angels. Initially utilized as a starter, he soon found his niche in the bullpen. His most productive season came in 1985, recording career highs with six wins, 12 saves, 58 strikeouts, and 91 innings pitched .
In the 1986 postseason, Crawford played a pivotal role, securing two wins, including a victory in Game 2 of the World Series against the New York Mets, despite not recording a win during the regular season .
After his tenure with the Red Sox, Crawford joined the Kansas City Royals in 1989. Over three seasons, he maintained a steady presence in the bullpen, averaging 60 innings per season and achieving a notable four-inning save against the Milwaukee Brewers on August 10, 1990 .
Over his 10-season MLB career, Crawford appeared in 277 games, posting a 30–23 win-loss record, a 4.17 ERA, 19 saves, and 320 strikeouts over 562.2 innings pitched .
Steve Crawford’s career reflects the journey of a dedicated pitcher who adapted to the evolving demands of the game. His contributions, particularly during the Red Sox’s 1986 postseason run, underscore his role as a valuable team player.
The Score on Steve Crawford – 6.5
Steve is a somewhat reliable returner. Sometimes he takes a long time to return and others seems a little quicker. He has a skip in his signature but he generally has a bigger autograph that fills up the card fills up well. I think he has some cards that are not easy to sign though.
Thanks Mr. Crawford! I’m giving these a 6.5 overall.
These aren’t my first returns from him. To see the other returns check out these posts:
