The Story of the Autograph
Steve Christie was a placekicker in the National Football League for 15 season and played for 4 teams: Buccaneers, Bills, Chargers, and Giants. He was with the Jags in 2004 before he was with the Giants but didn’t play in a game. But he is best known as a member of the Bills as he was there for nine years and made a ton of clutch kicks in big games while he was there.
Christie is originally from Oakville, Ontario in Canada and attended college in the US at William & Mary. He went undrafted, as kickers and punters often are, and joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1990. He was an All-Pro in his rookie year after making all of this extra points and then 23 of the 27 field goals he attempted. After one more year with the Bucs he would move to the Bills.
Steve was a Bill for nine years and he was part of so many big Bills moments. In the huge comeback against the Oilers he had a successful onside kick that he recovered himself AND he kicked the game winning field goal in OT (his shoe from that game is displayed in Canton). A couple years later he would make the longest field goal in Super Bowl history with a 54-yard field goal in Super Bowl XXVII. Of course, all of those appearances in the Super Bowl were loses, but given the Bills made it to four straight, I don’t think you can say they aren’t one of the best teams ever. Steve was a big part of that.
After Buffalo Steve played in San Diego and then moved to Jacksonville. He almost retired in training camp there, but the Giants picked him up for his final season. Then in 2007, he would head to Toronto to play for the Argonauts in the CFL. But it was really only a good way to retire in the CFL for a special moment as a Canadian citizen.
The Score on Steve Christie – 5.5
Steve has a pretty solid autograph. I think his style is pretty standard and he uses a good marker in general. I just wish these were a little bigger. He calls out the team, which is a little interesting in all these because you can see the team he’s on. But it’s a good signature in general. I which he wasn’t playing the Falcons on two of these cards because it makes the background a bit dark. I think they would have look better if the cards weren’t as busy.
Thanks Mr. Christie! These get a 5.5.
