The Story of the Autograph

Steve Alford is a former star college basketball player and NBA player and is currently a college head coach. He played in the NBA from 1987 to 1991 and is currently coaching the Nevada Wolf Pack.

Alford was born and raised in Indiana. The son of a coach, he started slowly as a freshman in high school but eventually became Mr. Basketball in Indiana as a senior in 1983. He would next go on to play for Bob Knight and the U.S. Olympic team on their run to the gold medal in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. He played his college basketball with coach Knight and as a Hoosier was All-Big Ten from 1985 to 1987 and the Big Ten MVP in 1987 along with being a two-time first-team All-American in 1986 and 1987. But the highlight was bring part of the 1987 NCAA Champion Hoosiers.

He was chosen with the 26th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He was expected to go to the Indiana Pacers but they instead chose Reggie Miller. While that wasn’t popular in Indiana at the time, I don’t think they are complaining now. But Alford never really did that much in the NBA. He was in the league for four seasons and only played 169 total games bouncing between Dallas and Golden State.

Alford’s career as a college coach is a bit more impressive. In D-1 he moved from Southwest Missouri State, to Iowa, to New Mexico, to UCLA, and now he’s with Nevada. He’s led a conference champion, conference tournament champions and was Coach of the Year three times in the MWC.

The Score on Steve Alford – 5.5

These are always a bit interesting to me. It’s as if he is writing a letter to me on the card. It’s a lot like Jeff George does from time to time. I think the one thing that confuses me a little is that it loos like he is writing “God Blessings” with the “God” almost having a squared symbol on it. It makes me wonder if it’s “God’s Blessings” or was supposed to somehow be “Good Blessings.” Either way, a basketball card makes this even harder to read than football cards can be.

Thanks Mr. Alford! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
