The Story of the Autograph
Stan Williams was a right handed pitcher in the major leagues from 1958 through 1972. I think he counts his time in the minors with what he wrote on the card. He played with the Dodgers, Yankees, Indians, Twins, Cardinals, and Red Sox. He was an All-Star (1960) and won two World Series Championships with the Dodgers in 1959 and 1960.
In the beginning of his career Stan was mostly used as a starter. He put up winning or even records in each of his first six seasons (five with the Dodgers and one with the Yankees). While with the Dodgers he had some big impacts in the postseason, both positive. First in 1959, he came into Game 2 of a playoff series with the Braves with the game tied 5-5 in the 10th. He tossed three scoreless innings without allowing a hit and the Dodgers won the pennant in the 12th. In 1962 he wasn’t as successful against the Giants. He blew the save in the eight inning of Game 2 of the playoff, but the Dodgers would eventually win the game. But in Game 3 he came in a run up at 4-3 in the top of the ninth and gave up a sac fly, wild pitch, intentional walk and walk to ultimately lose the game.
Most of is success was with the Dodgers from 1958 through 1962. That’s were more than half of his career wins (57 of his 109) came. But with this card representing him for 1970 with the Twins, that was a pretty good year. He went 10-1 as a reliever with a 1.99 ERA in 113.1 innings.
The Score on Stan Williams – 6.5
For an older guy, Stan has a lot more character than I would expect. I feel like players from the 60’s usually have more standard signatures. But with the way Stan treats his “S”s, he definitely has some style. Stan also likes to put a lot on the card. I covered up my last name but when he wrote it he messed it up a little bit so I took a little off for that.
Thanks, Mr. Williams! I’m giving this one a 6.5.
