The Story of the Autograph
Sonny Jackson was a speedy, slick-fielding shortstop who played in the major leagues during the 1960s and 1970s. Best known for his breakout rookie season with the Houston Astros and later his time with the Atlanta Braves, Jackson carved out a solid career as a contact hitter and defensive asset.
Roland Thomas “Sonny” Jackson was born on July 9, 1944, in Washington, D.C. His baseball talent was evident from a young age, and he signed with the Houston Colt .45s (later renamed the Astros) as an amateur free agent in 1963. He quickly rose through the minor leagues, showcasing excellent speed and defensive ability.
Jackson made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 1963 but didn’t become a regular until 1966. That year, he enjoyed the best season of his career, hitting .292 and setting a National League rookie record with 49 stolen bases. His speed on the bases and ability to make contact made him a valuable top-of-the-order player. Jackson finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting behind Tommy Helms of the Cincinnati Reds.
In 1967, Jackson was traded to the Atlanta Braves, where he spent the remainder of his career. While his offensive numbers declined, he remained a steady defensive presence at shortstop and later transitioned into a utility role. He played with the Braves through the 1974 season, finishing his MLB career with a .251 batting average, 7 home runs, and 162 stolen bases over parts of 12 seasons.
After retiring as a player, Jackson stayed involved in the game as a coach and instructor. He worked in the Braves’ minor league system and later served as a coach at the major league level. His experience as a speedster and defensive specialist made him a valuable mentor for young infielders.
Sonny Jackson may not have been a superstar, but he was a key contributor during his time in the majors. His rookie season remains one of the best in Houston Astros history, and his speed and defense left a lasting impression. A player who always gave his best effort, Jackson’s career is a reminder that success in baseball comes in many forms—not just through power hitting but also through hustle, speed, and smart play.
The Score on Sonny Jackson – 5.5
Sonny has a bit of a shaky signature. It looks like there’s a bit of a smudge on it as well. The card gave him a good place so sign and he took it. I’ll have to see if I have more of Sonny’s cards and try him again in the future.
Thanks Mr. Jackson! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
