The Story of the Autograph
Shelby Miller is a starting pitcher in the major leagues, currently playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His career in the majors started in 2012 with the St. Louis Cardinals. After that he played for the Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, and Chicago Cubs.
Miller was born and raised in the Houston area. He was a pitcher in college and had a no-hitter during his sophomore year and then three no hitters as a junior including one perfect game. He was a fireballer in high school and also played tight end and defensive end on the football team. He earned a scholarship to attend Texas A&M University, but before he did that he decided to sign with the Cardinals after they drafted him in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft with the 19th overall pick.
Miller played well as a Cardinal. He debuted on September 5, 2012 and won one game in six starts before the end of that season. In what would unfortunately be the best year of his career in his first full season, he went 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA in 31 games. He finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting that season. He following that up with a 10-9 season. The Cardinals traded him to the Braves in November 2014 for Jason Heyward and Jordan Walden.
In his only year with the Braves he started out going 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA and made his one and only All-Star game. That included a couple really impressive games. But the second half of the season would not go well. He would go on to lead the league in losses with 17. The Braves would end up trading him to the Diamondbacks during the offseason in a deal that got them Dansby Swanson and Ender Inciarte. Unfortunately he continue to struggle in Arizona.
He’s made a few stops since then and that include skipping the 2020 season as he opted out due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The Score on Shelby Miller – 6.0
If you follow the blog regularly you know I’ve been trying to expand the cards I have for the expansion teams since 1993. So it was really nice to get Shelby in an D-Backs jersey. That said, since he had the most success as a Cardinal, I really would like to get him in that uniform too. His signature came out well on the card, but I think this card doesn’t show it off as well as it could.
Thanks Mr. Miller! I’m giving this return a 6.
