The Story of the Autograph
Scott Holman, born on September 18, 1958, in Santa Paula, California, had a brief but notable career as a pitcher in Major League Baseball, primarily with the New York Mets. A right-handed pitcher, Holman made his MLB debut on September 20, 1980, at the age of 22. He played for the Mets over three seasons from 1980 to 1983.
Holman’s career was marked by flashes of potential, especially in 1982 when he posted a solid 2.36 ERA across 26.2 innings, recording two wins. His performance declined in 1983, during which he shouldered a heavy load, appearing in 35 games and starting 10. Despite showing durability, his ERA rose to 3.74, and he struggled with control, issuing 52 walks across 101 innings that season. His overall career stats include 3 wins, 8 losses, and a respectable 3.34 ERA in 134.2 innings pitched, with 58 strikeouts.
Though Holman’s major league career was relatively short, spanning just 43 games, he showed perseverance, battling through injuries and competition for a place in the Mets’ rotation. After his final MLB appearance in 1983, Holman moved on from professional baseball but remains remembered by fans for his contributions to the Mets during the early 1980s.
Holman was undrafted out of Ventura College, making his rise to the majors a testament to his work ethic and determination. Today, he remains a figure of interest for those who followed the Mets during that period of transition in the early 1980s.
The Score on Scott Holman – 7.0
This is a great return from Scott. Its too bad he doesn’t have that many cards, or at least I don’t have other cards of his. But this 1984 Topps card really gave him a great place to sign and he took advantage of it.
Thanks, Mr. Holman! I’m giving this return a 7.
