The Story of the Autograph
Scott Burrell is a former professional basketball player in the NBA. He played as a guard and forward for the Charlotte Hornets (twice), Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets from 1993 to 2001.
Burrell was born and raised in Connecticut and played multiple sports in high school. He was a great baseball player and is actually the first American athlete to be a first round draft pick for two major sport organizations. The Mariners drafted him during his senior year but he would have had to skip college (the Blue Jays would draft him during his college days too). Instead Burrell went to UConn after deciding against going to Miami.
He played at UConn as the men’s program was really starting to come into prominence. He became the first player in NCAA history to compile 1,500 points, 750 rebounds, 275 assists, and 300 steals. He was also part of a huge play in the NCAA tournament in 1990 with a full court pass to Tate George to beat Clemson as the clock expired. All this was while he started his college days playing baseball in the summer.
After college, the Charlotte Hornets drafted Burrell with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 1993 NBA Draft. He improved from 4.8 points per game to 11.5 points per game from his first to second year to win the NBA Most Improved Player Award. He was mostly a supporting player during his career. He was part of the Bulls for their 1998 NBA Championship win.
These days Burrell is the head coach at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Score on Scott Burrell – 5.0
I’m loving the card for Scott in a UConn uniform. Those actually remind me of a set of UConn cards my aunt picked up for me back in the day. Scott’s autograph is almost stacked, but not necessarily. But of course the issue with these is just how much is going on on these dark cards. The autograph shows up best on the Stadium Club card but there is a bit of wear on that where it probably rubbed off on the other card in the envelope.
Thanks Mr. Burrell! I’m giving this return a 5.
