The Story of the Autograph
Russ Courtnall is a former right wing in the National Hockey League. He played from 1983 to 1999 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, and Los Angeles Kings.
Courtnall was born and raised in British Columbia in Canada. He was a top prospect coming out of junior hockey and the Maple Leafs took him as the seventh overall pick in the 1983 NHL Draft. He spent six years with the Maple Leafs and at first he didn’t score as much as they thought he might. But in 1985-86 he was put on a line with former Notre Dame Hound teammates Gary Leeman and Wendel Clark, the called it The Hound Line. That helped him to his first 20+ goal season and he put in several consecutive years of doing that.
The Leafs wanted him to play tougher hockey that hurt his offense and then dealt him to the Canadiens for an enforcer. He became a fan favorite with the Habs and was great in the playoffs. He helped them advance to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1989 where they would eventually lose to the Calgary Flames.
He was traded a bunch after that and moved around a lot. In 1992-93 he put up a career high 36 goals and then a career high 57 assists and 80 points the year after. He ended up with 297 goals, 447 assists and 744 points in 1029 regular season games.
The Score on Russ Courtnall – 6.5
This is my first ever hockey success. This was a good one because from what I’ve seen as I’ve paid more attention to hockey returns, Russ is a good signer, very consistent and returns things quickly. Hockey cards seem to be pretty busy, much like a football cards. But with all the white of the ice and boards I think there’s a better chance that the cards are brighter. But I will say those Topps cards tend to be pretty dark.
Thanks Mr. Courtnall! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
