Ruben Amaro Jr. has dedicated his life to baseball, contributing as a player, executive, coach, broadcaster, and innovator. Born on February 12, 1965, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was immersed in the sport from an early age, influenced by his father, Ruben Amaro Sr., a former MLB player and coach.

Amaro Jr. attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia before playing collegiate baseball at Stanford University. He played in the major leagues from 1991 to 1998, including five seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Transitioning from playing, Amaro Jr. joined the Phillies’ front office, serving as assistant general manager during their 2008 World Series victory. He was promoted to general manager in November 2008, leading the team to a National League pennant the following season. After his tenure as GM ended in 2015, he took on coaching roles with the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets, gaining on-field experience from a different perspective.

In July 2020, Amaro Jr. joined NBC Sports Philadelphia as a broadcaster, bringing his extensive baseball knowledge to television audiences. He has also contributed to MLB Network, further showcasing his expertise in the sport.

In 2025, Amaro Jr. co-founded Sluggball, a 4-vs-4 situational hitting competition designed to provide baseball enthusiasts with a new way to engage with the sport. Sluggball emphasizes skill and strategy, allowing participants to experience the thrill of hitting without the need for running or fielding. The inaugural event is scheduled for May 10, 2025, at Trenton Thunder Ballpark in New Jersey.

I love when I get returns back from Ruben because it reminds me of laughing with my kids, at least indirectly. My kids loved The Goldbergs and we watched it together. Knowing who Ruben was I was able to connect them to the cards. As for his autograph, he does a good job and he’s been a good signer over the years. I think that my favorite of this bunch is the 1992 Fleer card.
