The Story of the Autograph

Ron Gardenhire is a former infielder and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1981 to 1985 with the New York Mets and later managed from from 2002 to 20014 with the Tigers and from 2018 to 2020 with the Detroit Tigers.

Gardenhire was part of a military family and was born while they were in Butzback, Germany. He went to high school in Oklahoma and then went to college at the University of Texas. The Mets drafted him in the sixth round of the 1979 MLB Draft. He would make his major league debut on September 1, 1981.

He only really had significant time in his second season of 1982. That year he played in 141 games and put up a .240 average with three homers and 33 RBI. The most he played beyond that was 74 games in 1984. After the 1986 he was traded to the Twins. He spent a year in their minor league system and then retired from playing.

He immediately went into coaching and managing and after years of coaching the Twins he became their manager in 2002. In the thirteen seasons he managed in Minnesota he had eight winning seasons and five of those seasons the Twins had at least 90 wins. He later managed the Tigers in three ineffective seasons.

Ron has a nice signature and it came out really well on that 1985 card. But that 1986 Topps card is a bit funny. It looks like the ink really just didn’t take on the card for some of it. I wonder if there was something on the top of the card. I think it’s interesting that he put his number in different places. Usually if someone includes it the number will be in the same place.

Thanks Mr. Gardenhire! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
