The Story of the Autograph
Rod Langway is a former defensman in the NHL. He played from 1978 to 1993 with the Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitals. He also played a year in the WHA with the Birmingham Bulls in the 1977-’78 season.
Langway was born in Taiwan while his father was stationed there with the U.S. Army. He then grew up in Massachusetts and didn’t start playing hockey until he was 13. While he was great at hockey as a kid he also was the quarterback of the football team and was a top recruit. He then played catcher in baseball and was considered a top prospect. But it was a football recruiter for the University of New Hampshire who convinced him to play college hockey as UNH would let him play multiple sports. He helped lead the team to the NCAA hockey final four in 1977.
He was drafted by the Canadiens and the Bulls in the same year and ended up playing with the Bulls. He then moved to the Canadiens with the merger of the WHA and NHL and the Canadiens would win the Stanley Cup that year. In the 1982-’83 season he was traded to the Capitals where he would finish out the rest of his career. It was a blockbuster trade that would change the franchise. They went on a string of playoff appearances after not making the playoffs in the first several years of being in the league. The were in the postseason every year that he was with the team.
Langway was the captain of the Caps and known as the “Secretary of Defense”. Despite being a traditional defender and never being an overwhelming offensive force, he was definitely their leader and best player for many years. During his career he would end up with one Stanley Cup, two Norris trophies, three All Star game appearances and ultimately be a Hall of Famer.
The Score on Rod Langway – 6.0
I was so glad to get these cards back from Rod. It’s always great to get a Hall of Famer but with this being my first real foray into hockey it made it even nicer. The blue with the Capitals colors is so great too. Even if it is a little hidden on the busy cards.
Thanks Mr. Langway! I’m giving this return a 6.
