The Story of the Autograph
Robert Parish is a former center in the National Basketball Association. He played from 1976 to 1997 with the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets, and Chicago Bulls. His nickname was “The Chief”, after a character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Parish was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. He didn’t like basketball at first and tried to focus more on other sports. But a coach who saw his height early got him to concentrate on basketball. He went on to play at Centenary College, but went unnoticed because the NCAA placed penalties on the school for the way that they applied grading eligibility to players (which wasn’t really done outside of the rules). They still spent 14 weeks in the AP Top 20 poll, mostly during his senior year.
He was drafted by the Warriors in the 1976 NBA Draft. He was drafted in both 1973 and 1975 by ABA teams, but chose to sign with the Warriors (who were NBA championships prior to his rookie year). But the Warriors almost immediately went on the decline, making Parish question how long he would be in the NBA. A trade to the Celtics changed everything. Red Auerbach traded his 1980 first top pick of the draft and another first round pick to the Warriors for Parish and their first round pick (which became Kevin McHale) and the rest is history.
Parish was a huge part of the Celtics success. He helped them to three championships in the 80’s. He was a nine-time All-Star from 1980-81 through 1990-91. He had some amazing seasons, especially from the first four years he was there. He almost averaged 20 points a game in those years and had years where he put up 2+ blocks a game and over 10 rebounds a game.
He moved on to Charlotte and Chicago where he was part of another championship team before closing out his career. He a Hall of Famer and part of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and has his number retired by the Celtics (“00” which when I was younger, though not a Celtics fan, instantly made me like him).
The Score on Robert Parish – 5.5
Amazingly, Robert found a spot to sign on a Skybox card. I guess if anyone was going to find a good spot on one of this set’s cards, this was going to be it. I really wish I had more cards of his because it’s always great to be able to get a Hall of Famer to sign.
Thanks Mr. Parish! I’m giving this a 5.5.
