The Story of the Autograph
Felton Spencer was a center in the NBA for twelve seasons between 1990 and 2002. During that time he played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks.
Spencer was a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He led his high school team to the state tournament two years in a row but they never won the state title. He then went on to the University of Louisville and followed Pervis Ellison as the Cardinals center, taking over as the starter as a senior. He became the all-time field goal percentage leader for the team at 62.8%. The Timberwolves then drafted him with the sixth overall pick in the draft in the first round of the 1990 NBA Draft.
He had a solid rookie season statistically even though he split time with a veteran at center. That earned him All-Rookie second team honors. While he would always split time or be overshadowed in Minnesota by others, he would establish a single season blocks record that was later broken by Kevin Garnett.
He moved on to the Jazz in a trade for Mike Brown in 1993. He succeeded Mark Eaton there and played well with John Stockton and Karl Malone. Unfortunately an Achilles injury derailed his 1994-95 season and partially into the next. After his time in Utah he moved around a bit with the most significant time spent with Golden State.
He would later work as a security guard at Atherton High School and as an assistant coach at Spalding University and Bellarmine University.
Spencer passed away at the University of Louisville Hospital on March 12, 2023 at the age of 55.
The Score on Felton Spencer – 7.0
I’m combining two returns from Felton because my backlog is so big that I had two from him sitting in there. These came out really great and I love how his “F” and “S” really compliment each other with those loops. The first return came out the best. The marker he used was so strong and it really cuts through the busy nature of the basketball cards.
You’ll be missed Mr. Spencer. Rest in peace and my condolences to the Spencer family and any of his closed friends. You will be missed.
