The Story of the Autograph
Ricky Proehl, known for his dependable hands, clutch performances, and remarkable longevity, enjoyed a 17-year career in the National Football League (NFL). As a wide receiver, Proehl contributed significantly to the success of several teams and etched his name in football history with his championship pedigree and ability to perform in big moments. Ricky Proehl was born on March 7, 1968, in Bronx, New York, and grew up in Hillsborough, New Jersey. He attended Hillsborough High School, where he excelled in multiple sports, including football, basketball, and baseball. His talent as a receiver caught the attention of college scouts, leading him to Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. At Wake Forest, Proehl became a standout receiver. Known for his precise route running and ability to make difficult catches, he set several school records, including career receiving yards and receptions. His performance earned him All-ACC honors and put him on the radar of NFL teams.
Proehl was selected in the third round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Over the course of his career, he played for six teams: the Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers, and Indianapolis Colts.
Proehl made an immediate impact with the Cardinals, becoming a reliable target and leading the team in receiving yards in multiple seasons. His ability to find soft spots in defenses and secure critical receptions earned him a reputation as a go-to receiver. After leaving Arizona, Proehl played one season with the Seahawks and two with the Bears. While his numbers were modest during this period, he continued to demonstrate his versatility and value as a veteran presence on and off the field
Proehl’s career reached new heights with the St. Louis Rams. As a member of “The Greatest Show on Turf” he was part of one of the most explosive offenses in NFL history, led by quarterback Kurt Warner. Proehl is perhaps best remembered for his clutch touchdown catch in the 1999 NFC Championship Game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His 30-yard reception in the fourth quarter was the only touchdown of the game, sending the Rams to Super Bowl XXXIV. In the Super Bowl, Proehl contributed to the Rams’ thrilling victory over the Tennessee Titans, earning his first championship ring.
Proehl joined the Carolina Panthers in 2003, where he continued to be a valuable contributor. He played a pivotal role in the Panthers’ journey to Super Bowl XXXVIII, catching a game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter against the New England Patriots. Although the Panthers fell just short in that game, Proehl’s performance solidified his reputation as a player who thrived in high-pressure situations.
Proehl finished his career with the Indianapolis Colts, serving as a veteran mentor and depth receiver. In his final season, the Colts won Super Bowl XLI, giving Proehl his second championship ring before he retired in 2007.
Over his 17-year career, Proehl accumulated 669 receptions, 8,878 receiving yards, and 54 touchdowns. His consistency, professionalism, and knack for big plays left an enduring mark on the NFL.
After retiring as a player, Proehl transitioned to coaching, serving as a coach for the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2016. Under his guidance, players like Steve Smith Sr., Kelvin Benjamin, and Devin Funchess flourished, with the Panthers reaching Super Bowl 50 during his tenure. In addition to coaching, Proehl founded Proehlific Park, a sports and fitness facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, dedicated to training young athletes and promoting community health.
Proehl’s football legacy also extends to his family. His sons, Austin and Blake, have pursued football careers, with Austin playing in the NFL and Blake signing with the Minnesota Vikings.

Ricky has a really nice signature. His capital letters are so big and they give great size and style to the autograph. I think this one worked out really well with how he signs generally. The one thing I had about this card is the fact that its one team on the design and then one team on the uniform. But would I have rather them photoshopped something, not sure I would want that either.
