The Story of the Autograph

Rick Monday was an outfielder (center fielder mostly in the beginning of his career) in the majors from 1966 to 1984. He played for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics from 1966-1971, the Chicago Cubs from 1972-1976, and the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1977-1984. He’s currently a broadcaster but he’s probably most famous for stopping an American flag from being burned at Dodger stadium during a game.

Monday was born in Arkansas but went to high school in Southern California (amazingly just like Jerry Turner from yesterday). Tommy Lasorda (then a scout) offered him a contract out of high school to play for the Dodgers, but he went to Arizona State instead. He played with Reggie Jackson and helped the team to the 1965 College World Series championship and earned All-America and College Player of the Year honors as a sophomore. The Athletics, then in Kansas City, made him the first overall selection in 1965.

After spending 1965 and most of 1966 in the minors, Monday was a September call up. In 1967 he was in the bigs for good and the next year he was an All-Star after the Athletics moved to Oakland. He moved on to Chicago and Los Angeles via two trades in the 70’s. He’d make the All-Star team again in 1978 while with the Dodgers while have what might have been his best season in his career. In maybe his best baseball moment, he hit a two-out, ninth-inning homer against the Expos in 1981 to help the Dodgers to victory in the NLCS. The Dodgers would then go on to beat the Yankees in the World Series that year.

The Score on Rick Monday – 6.0

BraveSTARR Score LogoBraveSTARR Score 6

Rick has a bit of a small signature, but it does have some style. I think that if this was a bit bigger I would have given a higher score. Also, I think if I was maybe a little thicker marker it could have a higher score. The marker on these is thin and I think it’s either an issue of it maybe running a little low or maybe just it being quick that makes it come out this way. I think Rick would have a great signature on a ball with a good ball point pen.

Thanks Mr. Monday! I’m giving these a 6.
