The Story of the Autograph

Rich Monteleone is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the majors. He played from 1987 to 1996 with the Seattle Mariners, California Angels (twice), New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. He also played in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons in 1995.

Monteleone was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. He was drafted out of high school by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the 1982 MLB Draft with the 20th overall pick. He never played in the majors for the Tigers though. He was traded to the Mariners in December of 1985 for Darnell Coles. He made his major league debut with the Mariners on April 15, 1987 and made just three appearances that season.

The Mariners released him and he was picked up by the Angels where he spent two years and got his first significant time in 1989. The Angels then traded him to the Yankees with Claudell Washington in exchange for Luis Polonia. He spent the most significant time with the Yankees during his time in the majors. But closing out his career he moved around a lot, including to Japan. He was also exchanged again between the Angels and Yankees. He made his last appearance in his second stint with the Angels on July 11, 1996.

There are some guys that have long names, but their signature doesn’t appear that they do. Rich seems that way to me. It looks like he puts in the beginning of his last name but kind of cuts it off a little bit after then “t”. I think the 1993 Fleer card came out the best.

Thanks Mr. Monteleone! I’m giving this return a 7.
