The Story of the Autograph
Renie Martin is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He had a six-year career from 1979 to 1984 with the Kansas City Royals, San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies.
Martin was born and raised in Delaware. He then went on to play for the University of Richmond in college. He was drafted from there twice before he signed. First he was drafted in the ninth round of the 1976 MLB Draft by the Giants and then he was drafted in the 19th round of the 1977 MLB Draft by the Royals and signed with them. He made his major leage debut two years later on May 9, 1979.
He pitched out of the bullpen exclusively in his rookie season. In his second season he was given a chance to start with 20 starts in 32 appearances. He went 10-10 with a 4.39 ERA. He went back to relieving the following season and improved his ERA to 2.77. The Royals then traded him to the Giants with Craig Chamberlain, Atlee Hammaker and Brad Wellman for Vida Blue and Bob Tufts.
The Giants put him back on the mound as a starter and he went 7-10 with a 4.65 ERA in 25 starts in 29 games. He moved back to relief the following year before they traded him to the Phillies with Al Oliver for Kelly Downs and George Riley. The Phillies would end up releasing him after 1984. He signed with the Royals again but never made it back to the big club.
The Score on Renie Martin – 6.5
Renie has a very active signature. There’s a lot going on in a small space. The blue looks really awesome with the Royals cards. Unfortunately it doesn’t show up very well on the Giants uniform on that 1983 Fleer card. I’m not sure there’s much to be don about that though. I think my favorite is the 1981 Topps card, which is my favorite card of this bunch in general. That’s one of the first designs I remember collecting.
Thanks Mr. Martin! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
