The Story of the Autograph
Raul Allegre’s journey to the NFL is a story of perseverance, talent, and breaking barriers. As one of the few Mexican-born players in the league’s history, Allegre carved out a successful career as a kicker, earning a Super Bowl ring and a lasting legacy in professional football.
Allegre was born on June 15, 1959, in Torreon, Caohulta, Mexico. His athletic journey began not with football, but with soccer—a natural fit for many young athletes in Mexico. Allegre’s strong leg and precision would later translate seamlessly to American football.
His path to the NFL was unconventional. Allegre moved to the United States, attending high school in Shelton, Wyoming. Then he stayed for college, first at the University of Montana, then attending the University of Texas. Initially joining the Longhorns as a walk-on, he quickly established himself as a reliable kicker. Allegre’s college career was marked by consistent performances and game-winning kicks, laying the groundwork for his professional aspirations.
Allegre’s professional career began in 1983 after he went undrafted and then he signed with the Baltimore Colts. His rookie season showed promise, and he continued to improve his accuracy and range. However, it was with the New York Giants that Allegre made his mark.
Joining the Giants in 1986, Allegre became a key player for the team. His reliability under pressure was critical during the Giants’ run to Super Bowl XXI. In that Super Bowl, Allegre contributed with his accurate kicking, helping the Giants secure a 39-20 victory over the Denver Broncos. His performance on the grand stage solidified his reputation as a clutch kicker.
Allegre played with the Giants until 1991, spending the second part of that final season with the New York Jets. Over his NFL career, he completed 137 out of 186 field goal attempts, with a career-long field goal of 55 yards. His consistency on extra points was also notable, making 183 out of 190 attempts.
After retiring from the NFL, Raul Allegre transitioned to a successful career in broadcasting. He became a well-known sports analyst, particularly for ESPN Deportes, where he provided commentary on NFL games in Spanish. His insights and engaging style helped bring American football closer to Spanish-speaking audiences.
In addition to broadcasting, Allegre has also been involved in football camps and clinics, sharing his knowledge with young kickers and promoting the sport in Mexico. His work as an ambassador of the game has helped to inspire a new generation of athletes.
Raul Allegre’s legacy is not only defined by his on-field achievements but also by his role as a trailblazer. As a Mexican-born player who achieved success in the NFL, he broke down barriers and became a role model for aspiring football players from Latin America. His contributions to the sport, both as a player and a broadcaster, continue to resonate with fans.
From the soccer fields of Mexico City to the bright lights of the Super Bowl, Allegre’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, talent, and breaking new ground.
The Score on Raul Allegre – 5.5
Raul used a thin marker on this one and unfortunately it just doesn’t help cut through the busy images. I would say that given he was a placekicker, there’s almost a guarantee there’s going to be two players on the card, like there is here. But I guess football cards might be the most likely to have a second player on the card. The other thing that happened here is that he addressed these to “Ben.” That one is on me and my terrible handwriting. I’m hoping that will be fixed more these days because I started using an address stamp. My name will still be written in the letter, but the envelopes will be stamped.
Thanks Mr. Allegre! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
This is my second successful return from him. To see the first, check out my post from May 2020.
