The Story of the Autograph
Randy Wood is a former left wing in the NHL. He played from 1986 through 1997. He spent most of his career in New York with the Islanders (in two stints). After that he would go on to play for the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Dallas Stars.
Wood is a native of Princeton, New Jersey. That was because his Dad was the coach of the Princeton University hockey team. But while he was born in Princeton, he grew up in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. He played a season in the AHL before going to college and playing at Yale University. He went undrafted and then played again in the AHL with the Springfield Indians.
The New York Islanders gave him his NHL debut in 1986. He only played in six games and scored one goal. But he would come back the following year and play in a majority of the team’s games. He had his best seasons on Long Island, scoring 20-plus goals in four of out of the five seasons he played with the Islanders (one of those he was traded in). His best season was probably 1989-’90 when he had a career high 24 goals and one short of his career high in assists with 24 as well.
He moved on to Buffalo in the blockbuster deal that sent Pat LaFontaine, Randy Hillier, Wood, and a fourth round pick to Sabres for Pierre Turgeon, Dave McLlwain, Uwe Krupp and Benoit Hogue to the Islanders. He had some more successful seasons in Buffalo, but not to the same level as his time with the Islanders.
He moved on to Toronto in 1994 and then to the Stars in 1995. What was funny about the move to Dallas, he was part of a traded that for the second time in his career involved Benoit Hogue going in the other direction. He spent the final year of his career back with the Islanders.
The Score on Randy Wood – 5.5
This return from Randy is a great example of feeling bad about a score. I’m not rating the autograph itself, but more the whole package. In this package, the hockey cards get in the way. Randy obviously puts a good amount of ink on your cards, but these cards are so dark that there’s no way it can stand out.
Thanks Mr. Wood! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
