The Story of the Autograph

Randy Lerch pitched in the majors mostly as a left-handed starter but was also used as a reliever toward the back half of his career. He pitched for 11 seasons with the Phillies (twice), Brewers, Expos, and Giants.

Lerch was drafted by the Phillies in the eighth round of the 1973 draft and he would make his debut on September 14, 1975. After two years of appearing in four total games in the majors, Lerch caught on with the Phils in 1977 and started 28 of the 32 games he pitched in. He would be a starter for the next five seasons throughout his time in Philadelphia and then Milwaukee and Montreal in 1982. From there he moved mostly to the bullpen.

Most years Lerch was solid and right around .500 as a starter. His best year might be 1978 when he was 11-8 with a 3.96 ERA (his best as a starter) and 96 strikeouts (a career high). For his career though he was 60-64 wit a 4.53 ERA in 253 games with 164 games started. But his best moment might have not even been a pitching moment. On September 30, 1978 he hit two home runs in a 10-8 victory that clinched the NL East Division championship for the Phillies.

Randy has a pretty good signature. I definitely like the way he fills up the card and I love the repetitive nature of the “y” and “L” together. While I like that he used two different pens, I don’t necessarily know why he did. The blue looks like it might be running low and I get that the black looks way better on the card where he’s in a Giants uniform.

Thanks Mr. Lerch! I’m giving this return a 6.
