The Story of the Autograph
Randy Choate is a former left-handed reliever in the major leagues. Like many left-handed relievers, and relievers in general, he moved around a lot in his career. Over 15 seasons from 2000 to 2015 he played for the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Tampa Bay Rays, Florida/Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals.
Choate was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Florida State University where he was third-team All-American in 1996 and an ACC All-Star in 1997. The Yankees when drafted him in the fifth round of the 1997 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut three years later on July 1, 2000. He was pretty lucky to be promoted that year as the Yankees would appear in the World Series and beat the New York Mets that year.
The next move for him looks like one in his stats but it’s actually two. In December 2003 he was traded with Nick Johnson and Juan Rivera to the Expos for Javier Vazquez. But before the next season began, at the end of Spring Training, the Expos traded him to the Diamondbacks for John Patterson. He would spend the next four seasons in Arizona. That included the season he appeared in 74 games, the most by any left-hander in D-backs history. He bounced to the minor still though and would end up signing a minor league contract with the Twins but never played in the majors with them and went back to Arizona.
2008 started a lot of moving around starting with the Brewers, then the Marlins as a free agent. He was traded to the Dodgers with Hanley Ramirez in 2012 in exchange for Nate Eovaldi and a minor league pitcher, Scott McGough. He signed with the Cardinals for the 2013 season and stayed with them for three seasons to close his career in the bigs. He did try and catch on with the Blue Jays and Dodgers again but ultimately retired in 2017.

Randy has such a fun signature. It’s got loops and a sort of “feature” with his number being circled by the bottom of the “y” in his name. Plus he filled up the card really well and the blue marker with the Dodger blue is perfect. He only played a little bit with the Dodgers so I would love to have other cards of his to try and have him sign. Unfortunately a lot of his career sort of falls into a dead spot for me in collecting.
