A couple months ago I finally got in on a sale from Ryan’s Vintage Cards and I love it, check out that post here. I loved it so much that when he offered a similar deal, this time with a little off the top, I decided go jump in on it again.
For me, I don’t think I can go wrong with what Ryan is doing here… 25 cards, a guaranteed autograph in each pack, and a good chance at some true vintage cards. All that for $95 shipped when you buy 20 packs. And this time he was offering that deal for $85… I was sold.
I think this one felt a little bit different than the first time I bought. I don’t think I got as many exciting things, but I would say that the overall feel of the packs was good. And of course, I had a ton of fun opening them.
Let’s dig in shall we…
Something With a Little Age To It
I think the big difference between this time and the last time was that I felt like I got a lot more within the realm of older cards. That 1954 Don Mueller is now the oldest card in my collection. Sure, its a bit damaged, but I’m not a condition freak. Hey, beggars can’t be choosy as they say. The last purchase I made the oldest card was from 1957 and I got a good stack of those, just like I did this time.
I really loved seeing the old logos on the cards, like you see from the Giants and Tigers logos on those above.
There were a good amount from the 60’s as well. Like I said, I think I got more truly vintage cards than I did the first time. What do I consider “truly vintage”, I would say pre-1970. I think “vintage” really depends on your perspective a bit, but for me that’s what I think of. Maybe there’s a range of like “older than 25 years” or “older than 50 years” but I think it also depends on when you started collecting and your feelings about the cards then.
Auto-Matic for the People
As I mentioned there’s an autograph in each pack, so that means 25 autographed cards to add to the collection. Rock, HoJo, and Bedrock were what I would considered the top of the heap from that perspective. I think I got one more HOFer in the first return and the Raines is not a duplicate, but I got him in an Expos uniform in my first purchase. That made this one not as exciting, but I think I am jaded after that first one.
The other guys that were good to see with ink are below. I have a good amount of Bobby Bonilla and Juan Samuel autographs in my collection as they were signing pretty often when I first started TTM collecting, but I didn’t have these cards. Travis Fryman was actually a guy I tried to find an address for an didn’t see anything reliable so I was glad to get that one.
For the most part you are getting a mix of All-Stars, stars, solid players, and journeyman in the packs from what I can tell from doing this twice. Add in one or two HOFers and it definitely sweetens the pot.
Good Guys
These were some of the more exciting cards that came in the packs. Those at the top are newer cards from Hall of Famers and those below are the older. There was a good amount of Rickey’s overall in these packs and that was consistent with the first purchase too.
Bernie Williams tended to be a big name in this latest purchase though.
Something Interesting
The Wheeler and Rendon cards a pretty good example of some of the interesting cards you can get. Sure these aren’t rookies, but “Future Star” is always good to see on a card I think. Of course I love the Wheeler as a Met fan even though he’s in Philly. The Rendon on the other hand is tougher. Definitely respected the dude but he was a Met-Killer (aren’t they all).
Do you notice that they are making the same face?
That brings be to some other interesting cards. It would be great to have that Mahler card signed, but he passed away in 2005. I love a getting a card signed of a guy signing cards. Carlos Delgado is always funny to see when he’s in the catcher’s gear.
But what about that Puckett card? Can you guess what kind of card that is? The hint is, what you are seeing might be actual size.
The answer later in this post. (That’s called a tease my friends)
Stack Attack
As always I have to have a TTM stack. And this time I split it into two. I wanted to show off some of the oldest cards that I’m going to try and get signed at some point in the future.
Side note… check out that White Sox logo.
RIP “Bad Dude”
I put this in a previous post, but RIP to John Stearns. I actually think I opened this the day after he passed and I took a good pause when I came across this one. He was one of the few good players on some pretty bad Mets teams back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. It was great to see that he was able to make it out to the Old Timer’s Day celebrations.
So overall, another fun time from Ryan. Last time I gave you an idea of what you could find in each pack. This time I made it all of the packs together (see below). It might be a bit hard to see, but I think it’s a good representative of the spread of what you’ll see in the packs. At least when you get 20 of them like I did.
Oh yeah the Puckett… It’s a Cracker Jack prize card!
