The Story of the Autograph
Paul Fenton’s impact on the world of hockey spans decades, from his days as a reliable NHL player witht the Hartford Whalers, Los Angeles Kings, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks; to his influential role in shaping teams as a front-office executive with the Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, and Florida Panthers.
Born on December 22, 1959, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Fenton’s hockey journey took him from collegiate competition to the NHL and eventually to prominent management positions, making him one of the more respected figures in the sport.
Fenton’s hockey career began to take shape at Vermont Academy before he went to Boston University, where his standout performances as a left winger couldn’t lead to being drafted. Before he started with the Whalers he had great performances with the Peoria Prancers in the IHL, winning the Ken McKenzie Trophy for being the most outstanding American-born rookie playing in that league. He was picked up by the Whalers and played in 34 games in Hartford over two seasons. In that time Fenton quickly gained a reputation for his scoring ability in the American Hockey League (AHL) with their Binghamton club.
Over his NHL career, Fenton suited up for various teams, including the Hartford Whalers, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Winnipeg Jets, and Toronto Maple Leafs. His most productive years came with the Winnipeg Jets, where he contributed solid offensive production. In total, Fenton played over 600 professional games across the NHL and AHL, and while he didn’t achieve superstar status in the NHL, his determination, skill, and leadership were evident throughout his playing career.
Fenton’s post-playing career saw him make an even greater mark in the world of hockey. After retiring in 1992, he shifted his focus to management, quickly rising through the ranks due to his keen eye for talent. He joined the Nashville Predators’ organization as the director of player personnel and was later promoted to assistant general manager. Fenton played a critical role in building the Predators into a competitive team, particularly in player development and scouting. His success in Nashville culminated in his appointment as general manager of the Minnesota Wild in 2018. Though his tenure with the Wild lasted just one season, Fenton’s ability to identify and nurture talent had already been well-established in Nashville, where he helped shape a team that became a perennial playoff contender.
In 2024 Fenton was a Senior Advisor to the General Manager with the Stanley Cup winning Florida Panthers.
The Score on Paul Fenton – 6.0
The marker that Paul used here let him down a little bit. Some of them came out OK, but that 1990 Pro Set for instance isn’t looking too good. And the image is busy on that one already so a week marker really won’t cut it.
Thanks Mr. Fenton! I’m giving this one a 6 overall.
