The Story of the Autograph
Patrick Flatley’s hockey journey is a testament to grit, leadership, and unwavering dedication. From his early days in Toronto to becoming a cornerstone of the New York Islanders, Flatley carved out a remarkable career defined by hard work and heart.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Flatley honed his skills in the city’s vibrant amateur hockey scene. Opting for collegiate development over junior leagues, he joined the University of Wisconsin in 1981. Under the guidance of coach “Badger” Bob Johnson, Flatley thrived, contributing significantly to the Badgers’ 1983 NCAA championship victory. His performance earned him All-American honors and a spot on the All-Tournament team.
In 1983, Flatley joined the Canadian National Team, showcasing his talent with 34 goals in 54 games. His Olympic stint in Sarajevo in 1984 further solidified his reputation, leading Canada with six points in seven games.
Post-Olympics, Flatley transitioned to the NHL, debuting with the New York Islanders. He made an immediate impact, scoring on his first NHL shot. His tenacity and physical play quickly became assets to the team.
Flatley’s NHL career spanned 14 seasons, predominantly with the Islanders. Known for his relentless work ethic, he earned the nickname “Chairman of the Boards” for his prowess in corner battles and puck retrieval. In 1991, he was named the fifth captain in franchise history, leading with humility and determination.
His best offensive season came in 1992–93, tallying 60 points. Flatley concluded his NHL tenure with 780 games played, amassing 170 goals and 340 assists.
After retiring, Flatley remained connected to the sport, working with the NHL Players’ Association in player affairs. He also contributed to the NHL Alumni Association, focusing on transition programs for retired players.
Back in Toronto, Flatley dedicated time to coaching youth hockey, including his own children. His contributions to the sport were recognized with inductions into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame in 2012.
The Score on Patrick Flatley – 6.5
These cards really didn’t give Patrick a great place to show off his signature. Even the 1990 Score card, which can tend to have more white space on it, doesn’t. And he’s not even wearing a dark uniform like some of the others. I think in the fight for the best cards, it’s going to be that 1990 Score or maybe between the 1991 Score and 1991 Pro Set.
Thanks Mr. Flatley! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
