The Story of the Autograph
Orlando Hudson is a former second baseman in the major leagues. His eleven-year career spanned from 2002 to 2012. During that time he played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres, and Chicago White Sox.
Hudson was born and raised in Darlington, South Carolina. He was a three-sport athlete in high school playing baseball, football and basketball, but was All-State and Player of the Year in baseball. The Blue Jays took a liking to him in high school and first selected him in the 33rd round of the 1996 MLB Draft, but he didn’t sign. He went to Spartanburg Methodist College and the next year the Blue Jays chose him again, this time in the 43rd round and he signed.
After several years in the minors he made his major league debut on July 24, 2002 against the Baltimore Orioles. After playing in just 54 games that first year he pretty much was a starter after that. In 2005 he would earn his first Gold Glove Award. Then in December of that year, the Blue Jays traded Hudson and Miguel Batista to the Diamondbacks for Troy Glaus and Sergio Santos.
He would blossom a bit more as a hitter in Arizona as he hit .294 in his D-backs years, 20 points over his career average. He earn two more Gold Glove Awards and earn his first All-Star appearance in 2007. 2006 was maybe the best year of his career. He hit .287 with a career highs in homers (15) and RBI (67).
After his three years in the desert he starting moving around as a free agent. He earned another Gold Glove and All-Star appearance in his first free agent stop in Los Angeles. After that he bounced around to three more teams. He didn’t sign with a team in 2013 but had said that he wasn’t ready to retire.
The Score on Orlando Hudson – 6.5
Orlando was a good signer even going back to when he was a player. I always loved the way he crossed his signature with that bar on the “H”. It also seems like he takes some time with each signature too given that style. I was really glad to get some Diamondbacks cards signed since I think those were some of his best years.
Thanks Mr. Hudson! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
