The Story of the Autograph
Nyjer Morgan is a former outfielder who played in Major League Baseball, Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, and in Korea in the KBO. He played from 2007 to 2015 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, Milwaukee Brewers, Yokohama DeNA BayStars, Cleveland Indians, and Hanwha Eagles.
Morgan was born in San Francisco but grew up in various places, including in Canada. He became interested in hockey after watching the Olympics in 1988 and went on to play Junior Hockey. He was originally drafted to play baseball by the Colorado Rockies in 1998 but didn’t sign. He signed after the Pirates drafted him in the 33rd round of the 2002 MLB Draft while he was at Walla Walla Community College in Washington state. He made his major league debut on September 1, 2007.
After two season where he saw a bit of major league time he saw 71 games with the Pirates in 2009 until they traded him to the Nationals with Sean Burnett for Joel Hanrahan and Lastings Milledge. The very next day he fractured his hand sliding into first and that limited him to 49 games for the rest of that season. The next season was just filled with incidents with fans and players that led to suspensions and fines.
Morgan was traded to Milwaukee before the 2011 season. Unfortunately he picked up another injury and that led him to be platoon with Carlos Gomez who would eventually take over the position. After his time in Milwaukee he moved around to Japan, back to the US, Korea and then to Mexico.
The Score on Nyjer Morgan – 6.0
Morgan, who refers to himself as “Tony Plush”, puts a little “T” at the end of his signature. It goes with what he did after getting a hit which was to make a “T” hand signal. I believe that’s like his alter ego on the field. He was quite the character while he played and I think his signature kind of fits along with that. I love the 2011 Topps Heritage card as I think those are one of the best sets to get autographed.
Thanks Mr. Morgan! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
