Tim to take a look back at #mybestnine on my @bravestarrcards Instagram account. I always say this, but this isn’t “MY” best nine. It’s not even my favorite or highest rated nine. But when it was put out into the ether, you all double-tapped or hit that little heart icon to add a like. When the likes a tabulated, that’s #mybest nine.
I’ll make an effort to try and figure out why something might be in the top 9 posts for the year. But in doing this over the last several years there are some key things that help. First, a newer card or a new player tends to get more likes. That’s probably just based on the generation using social media. Second, I tend to hashtag these things pretty well so that can make it appear for people who tend to follow those hashtags. But no matter what the reason, they bubbled up to the top so we are going to take a look at them.
One other thing to note, if you aren’t familiar with what I am posting, it’s definitely delayed. I’m working through a backlog that goes back quite a bit. So these were pretty much things I got back in 2020. All the info about them are in the posts that I make if you’re interested.
Without further ado, the #mybestnine from Instagram…
Brian Goodwin
7/12/2021 – Goodwin two, Goodwin two, goody Goodwin two shoes.
Brian is one of two active players who made the list. I don’t know that he’s a popular player necessarily, but having spent time in the DC area where I am, he definitely seemed like a nice guy. The card is from 2018, so that’s recent. But I’ll also so that I love the picture on the card AND his signature is pretty dope. He used the perfect marker for his signature and it really shows up well on there.
Wade Davis
6/16/2021 – This #straggler almost hit the 1K mark.
Wade is another recent player, but at the time that I posted this, he was a current player. I think he announced his retirement in November. So just like Brian Goodwin, current player + recent card = likes. This is one that sticks out though too. That powder blue uniform pops on IG and I think I probably added a little brightness effect on that one. This one was sent to Wade while with the Rockies in Spring Training 2018 and was out for 972 days. He got close to the 1K mark and might be one of the biggest stragglers that I posted this year.
Delino DeShields, Jr.
7/5/2021 – You defend DeSwords with DeShields.
Double D is another that fits into the same categories as the card above. And Like Wade Davis it was also a bit of a straggler. I sent it in Spring Training of 2020 while he was with the Indians and got it back later that same year. But Delino was only out for 248 days. He has a big wavy signature that I don’t think I could pick out as his, but he fills up that card nicely.
Art Howe
11/22/2021 – Howe do you do?
This is the first one that made me think a bit more. You know, like the song… “Things That Make You Go Hmmm”. It’s somewhat recent, but still more than a decade old. Plus it’s a manager card so that made me question it. I think I probably just caught the Mets fans with my hashtags. But I would also say that Art signed in a nice blue that goes with the cards and I think this is another one that pops as you are scrolling. You can see his signature really well.
David Murphy
12/10/2021 – Murphy’s Law…
I think this is a recent card of a guys that signs, but I don’t think I see people posting things from him a lot. Plus I think the image on the cards just plain look cool. I think this one is really down to the image. It’s odd really because this is such a modern subject matter on what is really a sort of old school/retro card design. Signatures come out great on Gypsy Queen card stock and this one is no exception to that rule.
Sam Fuld
7/11/2021 – This reminds me… I need to Fuld the laundry.
This one was a bit funny. As I was writing this post I used my post from last year as my template. It turned out that the card in this exact position last year was one that I posted on 7/12/2020. That made me wonder if for some reason there was something to do with the date in all this. I can pretty much guarantee there isn’t, but it made me think again.
Charlie Hough
10/5/2021 – #houghistough
The good ol’ knuckleballer Charlie Hough always brings the heat with his signature. This is another card that really pops on the screen as you are scrolling. That could be because of the filter or maybe those crazy old Marlins colors from back in the day. I think this one is also benefitting from the amazing #houghistough hashtag. If you know you know… amirite!
Tony La Russa
5/1/2021 – Tony! Toni! Tone!
I questioned this one probably the most of all of them. I don’t think there’s really anything about this one that makes it stick out and the autograph is small. I think Tony was in the news a bit towards the beginning of the season for a couple things he said or did on the field, so maybe that was part of it.
Brooks Robinson
3/12/2021 – We need to update his nickname for today’s technology… Brooks Roombason.
Brooks, who isn’t signing anymore because of his age and some things he going through health-wise, definitely gets a Hall of Fame bump in addition to this being a recent card. I didn’t have many old cards of his but I did get one signed along with this one. This one was just the best example of his signature and why I posted it.
Thanks for the Likes!
Thanks for all the likes. I know I’m full of corny Dad Jokes but I’m hoping you come for the cards and the ink on the cards, and then tolerate my terrible joke captions. If you are a TTMer I hope you had a great year and I hope that something you saw on my feed helped you out. If you aren’t a TTMer, I just hope I made you smile during the year.
Hoping we all have a great 2022!
