The Story of the Autograph
Mike Mason is a former left-handed pitcher with the Texas Rangers. He also played with the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins during a career that spanned from 1982 to 1988.
Mason as born and raised in Minnesota. After high school he first attended Normandale Community College. While he was there he was drafted three times and never signed: first was by the Detroit Tigers in the 14th round of the 1978 MLB Draft, second was by the Minnesota Twins in the second round of the 1979 MLB Draft, and the third was by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 1979 MLB Draft (the June Draft-Secondary Phase). But it wasn’t until 1980 when the Rangers drafted him in the first round with the 12th overall pick did he sign with a team. At that point he had transferred to Oral Roberts.
Two years later he made his major league debut as a September call-up on September 13, 1982. He played sparingly in his first two seasons and was up and down to the minors, only appearing in nine games between those two seasons. In 1984 he got his shot. Unfortunately he put up a 9-13 record in 1984 in 36 games with 24 starts and then an 8-15 record in 38 games with 30 starts. He turned it around a bit in 1986 with a 7-3 record in 27 games with 22 starts, but his ERA was still north of four at that point.
The Rangers traded him to the Cubs in May of 1987 for a player to be named later. Dave Pavlas was that player who came over about a month later. He was released by the Cubs in Spring Training the next year and signed as a free agent with the Twins in April of 1988. He only pitched in five games for them, all in relief, and put up an 0-1 record with a 10.80 ERA.
The Score on Mike Mason – 6.5
Mike has a pretty nice signature. There’s something interesting I find in his signature and that’s related to his “Ms”. Usually when someone has a name with repetitive letters like that the letters can almost match. Mike’s on the other hand look almost completely different. The loops before the last line are similar but you can hardly tell the second one is an “M”. It almost looks like an “H” to me.
Thanks Mr. Mason! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
