The Story of the Autograph
Mike Loynd is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played parts of two seasons in the majors, both with the Texas Rangers.
Loynd attended Florida State University where he excelled and was a huge part of the Seminoles reaching the 1986 College World Series. He had such a great year in fact that he won the 1986 Golden Spikes Award for being the best college player in the country. He was first drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 11th round of the 1985 MLB Draft but didn’t sign. Then the Rangers drafted him the following year in the seventh round and he signed with them.
Because of the success he had in college, it was thought that Loynd could come to the majors and succeed. He spent just a couple months between finished at Florida State and making his major league debut on July 24, 1986. With the Rangers in a pennant race they could have used a good arm. He had some initial success in his first starts with some really good performances, but then things started to turn. After starting 2-0 he finished with a 2-2 record in eight starts with a 5.36 ERA.
In 1987 he started in the bullpen, but made eight starts out of his 26 appearances. Unfortunately the Rangers, expecting a promising year as a team, didn’t start the year off well and Loynd went 1-5 with a 6.10 ERA. His last appearance in the majors was October 1, 1987. He continued in the minors with the Astros after being traded in March of the next year but never appeared in the majors again.
The Score on Mike Loynd – 7.0
I know he wasn’t a teenager in these pictures, but he looks really young on all of his cards. It’s funny that a half of these are 1988 cards and he never appeared in a game after 1988 and wasn’t eve with the Rangers any longer after being traded. I like Mike’s signature and his loopy “L”. I think it gets shown off the best on the 1988 cards.
Thanks Mr. Loynd! I’m giving this return a 7.
