The Story of the Autograph

Mike Dunne is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played for five seasons from 1987 to 1992 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, and Chicago White Sox.

Dunne was born in Indiana and grew up in Illinois. He went to college at Bradley University and was the 1984 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. That same year he was part of the U.S. Olympic baseball team that one a silver medal in the Los Angeles Olympics. Also that same year he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the MLB Draft with the seventh overall pick.

He never appeared with the Cardinals in the majors. In April of 1987 he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with Mike LaValliere and Andy Van Slyke for Tony Pena. He made his major league debut just a few months later on June 5, 1987. That rookie season was by far the best of Dunne’s career and earned him the nickname “Iceman” from catcher Mike Diaz. He put up a 2.5 WAR by going 13-6 with a 3.03 ERA in 23 starts and 163.1 innings. He finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting that year.

Dunne wouldn’t match that success again in the majors. A disappointing 1988 was followed by a trade to the Seattle Mariners in 1989. Unfortunately the change in scenery didn’t help his record. From there Dunne moved to the Padres via the rule 5 draft and then the White Sox as a free agent after a year out of the majors.

His pro career was hampered by injuries and he finished with the White Sox in 1992 after just four appearances in the majors that year. Later Dunne went on to be a coach at his alma mater.

I only got two back from Mike. I’m not sure if he is someone that limits you to just a couple or if this was just something that happened with my cards. He did send the others back though so that’s appreciated. I do like that one of the cards he signed was his 1988 Topps card with the Rookie Cup. These came out great considering he was a Pirate and could have had a black jersey on.

Thanks Mr. Dunne! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
