The Story of the Autograph

Mickey Stanley was a cornerstone of the Detroit Tigers for over a decade, known for his exceptional defense, versatility, and key role in the team’s 1968 World Series championship. A four-time Gold Glove Award winner, Stanley made a name for himself as one of the best defensive outfielders of his era, while also making an unforgettable position switch during the Tigers’ championship run.

Mitchell Jack “Mickey” Stanley was born on July 20, 1942, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A talented athlete, he was signed by the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent in 1960. He worked his way through the Tigers’ minor league system, making his major league debut on September 13, 1964.

By the mid-1960s, Stanley had established himself as Detroit’s everyday center fielder. Known for his speed, range, and defensive prowess, he won four consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1968 to 1970. Though not a power hitter, Stanley was a reliable contributor at the plate, consistently providing solid contact and occasional pop.

His most famous moment came during the 1968 season. The Tigers, led by pitcher Denny McLain’s 31-win campaign and a potent offense, won the American League pennant and faced the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. In a bold move, manager Mayo Smith shifted Stanley from center field to shortstop—an unfamiliar position—to make room for outfielder Al Kaline in the lineup. Despite having never played the position at the major league level, Stanley held his own defensively, helping Detroit win the series in seven games.

Stanley remained with the Tigers through the 1978 season, playing his entire 15-year career in Detroit. While his offensive numbers were modest (.248 career batting average, 117 home runs, and 500 RBI), his defensive contributions and leadership made him a beloved figure in Tigers history.

After retiring from baseball, Stanley returned to Michigan and pursued a career in business while remaining involved in local baseball events. He has often been recognized for his contributions to the Tigers, particularly for his role in the 1968 championship.

Mickey Stanley’s career is a testament to adaptability, selflessness, and defensive excellence. His willingness to switch positions in the World Series epitomizes team-first mentality, and his Gold Glove-winning defense solidified his place in Tigers lore. Though not a Hall of Famer, he remains one of Detroit’s most respected and admired players, embodying the grit and determination that defined the Tigers of the 1960s and 1970s.

Mickey is a guy I feel like I’ve come back to after a few years. I know I sent more to him earlier in my second TTMer stint this time around. He did a great job on these cards and I especially like the 1970 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Stanley! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.

This isn’t my first successful return from him. To see the other returns, check out these posts:
