The Story of the Autograph
Matt Young played in the major leagues from 1983 through 1993. Over those eleven seasons he played with the Mariners (twice), Dodgers, Athletics, Red Sox and Indians. A little more than half of the years he played were as a starter and although none of his statistics were outstanding, he did make an All-Star game in 1983 and got a World Series ring with the Athletics in 1989.
Young grew up in California and went to UCLA. The Mariners drafted him in the second round of the 1980 Draft. In his rookie season of 1983 he made the All-Star team and won 11 games (losing 13) but also put up a 3.27 ERA in 203+ innings. That was good enough to be top ten in ERA that year.
Then came Tommy John Surgery and trades and Matt never really got back to what he did that first year in the majors. He bounced around a bunch and didn’t stick with any team more than a year until he went to the Red Sox as a free agent for 1991 and 1992. With Boston in 1992 he pitched a no-hitter against the Indians. Well, an unofficial one. Young gave up two runs on seen walks and an error, but because he was the losing pitcher and was playing for the road team, he only pitched eight innings. Before that season the rule was changed to make an official no hitter mean that you had to pitch the ninth inning. This was the fourth no-hitter by a losing pitcher, or I guess, would’ve been if it was counted that way.
The Score on Matt Young – 6.5
I like Matt’s signature because it has some character. I just wish it was a little bigger. I feel like he doesn’t have a short name, but that’s kind of the way it comes out. In fact, when he signs it is first name is less letters but it comes out longer than his last name.
Thanks Mr. Young! I’m giving this one a 6.5.
