The Story of the Autograph

Mark L. Macon, born on April 14, 1969, in Saginaw, Michigan, has had a multifaceted career in basketball, transitioning from a celebrated player to a dedicated coach.

Macon’s basketball journey began at Buena Vista High School in Saginaw, where he quickly distinguished himself as a formidable player. His exceptional performance led his team to the 1985 state championship final, where he scored an impressive 30 points in a double-overtime loss to Beecher High School. In recognition of his outstanding high school career, Macon was honored with the title of Mr. Basketball of Michigan in 1987.

Choosing to further his basketball career and education, Macon attended Temple University. As a 6-foot-4-inch guard, he made an immediate impact on the court. Throughout his collegiate career from 1987 to 1991, Macon averaged 20.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. His scoring prowess and leadership were pivotal in propelling the Owls to significant NCAA tournament runs. Macon’s excellence did not go unnoticed; he was a consensus second-team All-American in 1988, earned the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year award in 1989, and was a four-time First-team All-Atlantic 10 selection. In honor of his contributions, Temple University retired his jersey number 12.

In the 1991 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets selected Macon as the eighth overall pick. He played in the NBA for six seasons, representing the Nuggets and the Detroit Pistons. During his NBA tenure, Macon participated in 251 games, averaging 6.7 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Beyond the NBA, he expanded his professional career internationally, playing for teams in Italy and Turkey, as well as in various U.S. minor leagues.

After concluding his playing career, Macon shifted his focus to coaching, aiming to mentor the next generation of players. He began as an assistant coach at Temple University from 2003 to 2006, later serving at Georgia State University for the 2006-’07 season. In 2007, Macon joined Binghamton University as an assistant coach and was elevated to interim head coach in 2009. He held the head coaching position until 2012. In April 2019, Macon returned to Temple University, embracing the role of Assistant to the Head Coach, where he continues to contribute to the development of young Owls players.

Mark doesn’t have a complicated signature, but it gets the job done. Unfortunately, the black marker didn’t help the job. But I don’t think a blue marker would have been much better. The best of these three is the 1991 Front Row card. This is definitely the era of my college basketball watching.

Thanks Mr. Macon! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
