The Story of the Autograph
Mark Grant is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He pitched in both a starter and relief capacity for the Giants, Padres, Braves, Mariners, Astros and Rockies. These days he works as the color commentator for the Padres.
The Giants drafted Grant in the first round of the 1981 MLB draft. He made 11 appearances in 1984 and another 4 appearances in 1986 while trying to get to the Show full time. 1987 was the year that he made it and he split his time between San Francisco and San Diego as he was involved in a trade between the two.
Grant would spend the rest of ’87 plus the next few years in San Diego. He had one of his best seasons there in 1989 when he went 8-2 in 50 games with a career best 3.33 ERA over 116.1 innings. The next year he was traded to Atlanta. After that he moved between a few places and had some minor league deals before finally playing in China and retiring.
He’s nicknamed “Mud” and he’s been in the Padres booth since 1997. He’s definitely a fan favorite in San Diego because of his humor and antics on the broadcasts.
The Score on Mark Grant – 6.0
I really like the way Mark fills up the cards. Some of these are just a bit too dark for a great score. That 1990 Upper Deck looks really good though. I just wish it was a Padres card because that’s more how I think of him.
Thanks Mr. Grant! I’m giving these a 6.
