The Story of the Autograph

Lenn Haruki Sakata, born on June 8, 1954, in Honolulu, Hawaii, has made significant contributions to baseball both as a player and a manager. As a fourth-generation Japanese American, Sakata’s journey through Major League Baseball (MLB) and his subsequent managerial career have solidified his legacy in the sport.

Growing up in Honolulu, Sakata attended Kalani High School, where he showcased his burgeoning talent on the baseball field. His skills earned him a spot at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. During his collegiate years, Sakata’s exceptional performance caught the attention of MLB scouts, leading to his selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the 1975 January Draft with the tenth overall pick.

Sakata’s MLB debut came on June 21, 1977, with the Milwaukee Brewers. Primarily playing as a second baseman and shortstop, he was known for his defensive versatility and reliability. After the 1979 season, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles, where he spent the majority of his career. A highlight of his tenure with the Orioles was being part of the 1983 World Series Championship team, making him the first player born and raised in Hawaii to participate in and win a World Series.

Throughout his 11-year MLB career, Sakata also had stints with the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees. He concluded his playing days with a batting average of .230, amassing 25 home runs and 109 RBIs over 565 games.

After retiring as a player, Sakata seamlessly transitioned into coaching and managing. He became a fixture in the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system, most notably managing the San Jose Giants. Under his leadership, the team secured multiple championships, and Sakata became the winningest manager in the history of the California League, amassing 899 victories. His success and dedication to the sport were recognized with his induction into the California League Hall of Fame in 2018.

Lenn Sakata’s contributions to baseball extend beyond his on-field performance. As one of the first players of Japanese descent in MLB, he paved the way for future generations of Asian American athletes. His commitment to the game, both as a player and a manager, has left an indelible mark on the baseball community. Today, Sakata’s legacy serves as an inspiration, exemplifying the impact of dedication, resilience, and passion in the world of sports.

Lenn is a new guy on my TTM list and I am so happy that this turned into a success. I feel like growing up he was not a “big” or “famous” player, but I remember him for his name. It just always seemed like an interesting one for me. I got him in three uniforms below which is great.

Thanks Mr. Sakata! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
