The Story of the Autograph
Larry Bowa is a former shortstop in the major leagues. He played from 1970 through 1985 with the Phillies, Cubs and Mets. He also managed the Padres and Phillies, and coached for several other teams.
Bowa is a native of Sacramento, California. He never made his high school team and when he was scouted by the Phillies at Sacramento City College, he was thrown out of the game for arguing. The Phillies ended up signing him in 1965 and he would make his major league debut five years later on April 7, 1970.
He was a great fielder who won two Gold Gloves and led the league in fielding percentage six times. He played the most games at shortstop when he retired with 2,222 and was amoung career leaders in fielding average, assists, and double plays. While many of his records are broken he still holds the record for career fielding percentage with .980.
He was also a five-time All-Star and won the World Series with the Phillies in 1980. Many of his best years were in Philadelphia where he was from 1971 through 1981. He eventually wore out his welcome in Philadelphia and moved on the the Cubs. The Cubs were lucky as Dallas Green, Bowa’s former manager, knew the Phillies pretty well and also ask for Ryne Sandberg in the trade that brought Bowa to Chicago.
Bowa started managing with the Padres a little over a year after retiring from playing. Unfortunately his style didn’t work well in San Diego and they didn’t do too well under Bowa. He went on to coach in several places and was back to managing in Philly from 2001-2004. He earned Manager of the Year honors in 2001 when the Phillies surprised a lot of people with an 86-76 record. But the he couldn’t keep up that success in the following years.
The Score on Larry Bowa – 7.0
Larry has always been a great signer. I’ve always found him to be quick and he’s always used a good marker for me. While a somewhat uncomplicated stacked autograph, it looks nice on these cards and came out strong.
Thanks Mr. Bowa! I’m giving these a 7.
