The Story of the Autograph
Larry Andersen was a pitcher in the majors from 1975 through 1994. He played as a right-handed reliever with the Indians, Mariners, Phillies (twice), Astros, Red Sox, and Padres. He never received an award or an All-Star nod. He made the postseason three times in his career, including twice with the Phillies that both included the World Series, but never won a ring.
Andersen was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the seventh round of the 1971 draft. The first few years of his career he spent exclusively in the minors. He made his major league debut for the Indians in 1975 and appeared in three games that year. He would make appearances in 1977 and 1979 as well, but nothing significant until 1981 when he played with the Mariners. This was after trades to the Pirates (who he never appeared with) and then to Seattle.
His career ERA was 3.15 but in 1989 and 1990 he was able to post back-to-back years with a sub-2.00 ERA. The Red Sox traded for Larry that year and let go of a prospect that had named Jeff Bagwell. Andersen finished out the year (a month basically) with the Sox and helped them to a division title. Then he went to the Padres in free agency in the offseason.
After some coaching in the minors for the Phillies, Andersen now works in the broadcast booth for the Phillies.
The Score on Larry Andersen – 7.0
I like Larry’s signature a lot. In a way it’s old school but I think the best part is that it’s recognizable as his. He actually included a card that I didn’t send him so while I’m psyched to get a bonus (the ’86 Topps card), I would bet it came out of what someone else sent. It happens to us all and I’m sure it’s evened out in the end.
Thanks Mr. Andersen! I’m giving this return a 7.
