The Story of the Autograph

Kirt Manwaring is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1987 to 1999 with the San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, and Colorado Rockies.

Manwaring was born and raised in New York. He went to Horseheads High School, which I only really mention because I think its an interesting name. He was drafted out of high school by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round of the 1983 MLB Draft but didn’t sign. He went on to attend Coast Carolina and was drafted by the Giants in the 2nd round of the 1986 MLB Draft. He debuted a year later on September 15, 1987.

Manwaring split time between the majors and minors for a bit and starting getting more significant time when he played in 109 games in 1992. He got the most time in 1993 when he put up a .275 average with career highs in homers (5) and RBI (49). He also won a Gold Glove Award that year.

He moved on to the Astros in a trade for Rick Wilkins to close out the 1996 season. Then in the offseason he moved on to the Rockies where he would close out his career. He played his last game in the majors on October 3, 1999.

I’m not the first with this thought and I don’t know that all of these cards represent it, but Kirt might have one of the high percentages of cool images on cards. I think my favorite of these has to be how the 1990 Upper Deck card came out. These are all really strong signatures and I love how the “K” comes out but I also love the tail of his “M”.

Thanks Mr. Manwaring. I’m giving this return a 7.5.
