The Story of the Autograph
Kevin Stevens is a former left wing in the National Hockey League. He played from 1987 to 2002 for the Pittsburgh Penguins (twice), Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, and Philadelphia Flyers.
Stevens is a native of Massachusetts. He played hockey and baseball in high school. He was good enough in baseball to be part of a try out for both the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. He chose hockey and went to Boston College on a scholarship. The Kings drafted him in the sixth round of the 1983 NHL draft and only a few months later his rights were traded to the Penguins. After graduating from college he played for the US National team in the 1987 World Championship and the 1988 Winter Olympics.
He made his debut for the Penguins at the end of the 1987-’88 season. He spent his first two seasons bouncing between the Penguins and their minor league clubs but in the 1989-’90 season he became a regular. In that first rull season he score 29 goals and had 41 assists. But it was the few years following that that he really showed his talents.
Starting with the 1990-’91 season he score at minimum of 40 goals for the next four years including 54 in the 1991-’92 season and a career high 55 the season after that. He also had 111 points or more in those two seasons. He earned three consecutive All-Star appearances in those years and helped the Penguins to two consecutive championships.
After his time in his first stint in Pittsburgh he bounched around a bit, aside from three consecutive years in New York with the Rangers. But while he was solid, he was never the same player he was in those first years. Unfortunately that included issues with substance abuse that had him in the NHL’s rehab program.
In more recent years he’s had legal issues around drugs. His recovery was documented in a 2018 documentary.
The Score on Kevin Stevens – 6.0
This is one of those unfortunate returns where the cards don’t do a great job of giving Kevin a good chance to show of his singature. The black marker over the black uniforms and busy images don’t let any marker stand out. That said, he seems to have used a really strong marker. These cards all have different surfaces and it came out well on each of them.
Thanks Mr. Stevens! I’m giving this return a 6.
